Fanie de Villiers was not too optimistic about South Africa chances before the tour. He was worried that South Africa would struggle in Indian conditions, but South Africa are on top having won five out of seven games in the ongoing tour winning the Twenty20 and One-day International series. De Villiers was pleasantly surprised by the way South Africa has performed on the tour so far. Let us look us the reason.
The Key for South Africa success in this series has been the batsmen scoring big hundreds has made the difference. When batsmen scoring centuries in India it gives the chances of the team to win games and in the last game 3 batsmen scoring hundreds was just exceptional.
The South African players have played IPL for 8 years they have actually levelled the playing conditions by adapting well to the Indian conditions. Our players are used to the Indian conditions. In the past, we haven’t lost to the India but we have lost against the conditions. India are not a good overseas they are only good in their own conditions.
Talking about the current pace attack of the South African team Fanie said it is easy to win matches when somebody is chasing 400 odd runs. However in the last game the South Africa did an extremely a good job. Rabada is a wonderful little talent with lots of potential. He will a learn a lot from Morkel and Steyn. Tahir was an absolute trump card for us. However to beat India in India you need batsmen to score big hundreds.
The South African team has done well in the series, but the main challenge is to perform well in test series where few players have played test cricket in India. It promises to be a cracking series.
On a parting note, he said that AB de Villiers could become more popular than Sachin Tendulkar in India.
