IPL 2017: Rising Pune Supergiant’s Bowling Woes – Some Unwanted Records Noted!

Rising Pune Supergiants are in a poor plight. Starting from the controversies since the start of the season of choosing Aussie star Steve Smith to captain the side over MS Dhoni and then moving on to absolute horrendous performance in the league matches.

The bowling department has come out to be complete mess! Ashok Dinda has bowled three of the six worst 20th overs in IPL history. He has conceded 272 runs in the final overs in IPL, going at 13.6 an over.

Ashok Dinda’s 30-run last over against Mumbai Indians was the most expensive 20th over in any IPL game. Mumbai was heading for a middling total against Rising Pune Supergiant before Hardik Pandya went ballistic and struck four sixes and a four off the final over. Dinda tried different lengths, but Pandya kept hitting straight and took Mumbai to 184. The last seven deliveries of the innings cost 36 runs.

The first delivery was sent out off the park through the cover region and the second one was smashed over long-off. The misery was added up on the third ball when a near-helicopter stroke of a straight delivery came into play and Pandya was pretty successful in scoring a maximum on this one too.

A slight chance of a wicket on the fourth delivery was produced by Dinda when the Indian all-rounder edged one outside off-stump only to grab a boundary eventually.

The penultimate delivery was again sent over the ropes. Though some more fireworks were expected in the over but a run-out on a wide delivery and a single of the last one ended the over with Dinda leaking 30 runs in it.

That was not the end of such records, he went on to do that again the other day in a match against Delhi Daredevils! Not only Dinda but the captaincy from the side looked crumbling as if the whole team is confused. They have failed to find the right combinations and also bowling in powerplays which have hurt them badly!

In Rising Pune Supergiant’s first game, Deepak Chahar opened the bowling with Ashok Dinda, and Adam Zampa and Imran Tahir were played as the overseas bowlers. In the second game, Dan Christian played in place of Deepak and, since one overseas bowler had to be replaced, Rahul Chahar came in for Zampa. On Tuesday against Delhi Daredevils, Rising Pune went back to the combination that worked somewhat in the first match. It’s evident that bowling is their weak link, but their method of addressing it is interesting.

The pitch looked flat and Samson looked in supreme touch. The faster the ball came on to the bat, the faster it disappeared. Considering Rising Pune had both Tahir and Zampa, it was surprising that stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane did not opt for either of them in the powerplay when the runs were flowing.

Also, in the eight games prior to this match, only two bowlers have bowled three overs in the Powerplay (Billy Stanlake and Sandeep Sharma).

Apart from bowling, Pune has been a hit and miss even in the batting department, partly due to Smith’s absence last night. No big partnerships were seen to carry the innings forward in chasing 205 runs on the board. Very early in the chase, the result was a foregone conclusion and that should have led to a slight change of tactics from Rising Pune. Instead of trying to hit every ball out of the park, they would have been better off batting the quota of 20 overs and scoring as many as possible.

Again, Rising Pune are looking one of the weakest teams in the IPL but hope they understand their shortcomings and weakness on the field and bounce back hard to hit it in the top spots of the league table!

It is said, you don’t select players just because they are big names but you choose players in a team because you need them to fit in the perfect role there for your side! But, alas people have failed to understand that!
