In a major turn of events the qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab has been postponed to Wednesday, 4 pm, due to heavy rains in Kolkata. The match will now be played at 4pm, while the eliminator in Mumbai, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, will be played at 8pm.
Decodingn the further, the IPL sources have revealed that if the weather conditions, on Wednesday, does not allow a full 20 over match in Kolkatal, overs will be reduced and a minimum five-over-a-side match will be held. If, by chance, even that is also not possible, then according to the rules, the game will be decided via a Super Over which will be a travesty for both the sides. 9.10 pm IST is the official scheduled cut-off time for the Super Over can start.
If that, too, is also not possible, then the team which has finished the league stage with more number of wins – in this case, it is Kings XI Punjab – will go through to the final. The weather forecasts for Wednesday in Kolkata is – scattered thundershowers in some places.
Earlier today, Eden Gardens had been fully remained under covers and water on the outfield was ankle-deep water in several parts of the ground due to heavy rains in the city.
According to media reports, umpires Nigel Llong and S Ravi gauegd the ground conditions with curator Prabir Mukherjee, at 5:15 pm IST, and decided to call of the game for the day.
IPL released an advisary: “Ticket-holders who purchased tickets for the original match day will be able to enter the stadium on Wednesday on presentation of their original ticket (with the bar code intact) at the turnstiles. Gates will open at 2.00 pm, refunds will only be made to ticket purchasers if the match is cancelled without a ball being bowled.”
