Irani Cup 2017: Wriddhiman Saha, Cheteshwar Pujara Puts Rest Of India On Brink Of A Win

A century from Wriddhiman Saha and a half-century from Cheteshwar Pujara have put Rest of India team on brink of a win in the Irani Cup 2017.

Rest of India was given the target of 379 with almost two days remaining in the game, and now it is fair to say that they will achieve the target easily as they are now just 113 runs away from lifting the trophy, for the second consecutive time, with six wickets left in the bank.

The day four of the Irani Cup started with Rest of India bowlers taking two remaining wickets of Gujarat right at the start. They conceded just 19 runs on a penultimate day and took the last two wickets. This was probably the biggest achievement for them as we have always seen bowling team struggling for to get tailenders but this was not the case today as Sidharth Kaul chipped in with two early wickets, to pack the bags of Gujarat right at the start of the day.

Rest of India was asked to chase a total of 379 in the fourth innings of the game. They had a poor start as they lost two early wickets of Akhil Herwadkar and Abhinav Mukund with the team yet to touch the 50 run mark. A wicket of Karun Nair at the total of 56 followed which left Rest of India in tatters.

Cheteshwar Pujara was running out of partners at the other end. He had some hopes from experienced Manoj Tiwary but he too showed his back and Gujarat was with the early advantage as the scoreboard was defining the story of the day. Rest of India was four down on a mere score of 63.

Then came the moment when Wriddhiaman Saha, who is eyeing a comeback in the Indian squad held the fort with Chetehwar Pujara to steer the team ahead. They both went on to share an unbeaten partnership of 203 until the end of the day to put the team on brink of a win. Meanwhile, Saha scored a century to bolster his chances for an Indian call-up for Bangladesh series and Pujara also scored a half-century to lead the team from the front.

Gujarat bowlers will now have an uphill task tomorrow to take wickets of these two players if they want to sniff a win whereas Rest of India squad in possibility looks to retain the Irani Cup.

Brief Scores: Gujarat (358 & 246) vs Rest of India (226 & 266/4 Wriddhiman Saha 123* Cheteshwar Pujara 83*; Hardik Patel 2-59)
