Is CAC Undermined By Ravi Shastri’s Appointment?

“Virat Kohli hasn’t sent any recommendation,” said Sourav Gangly, a member of CAC who is supposed to have reservations with Ravi Shastri, the new Head Coach of Indian cricket team.

Looking at what happened in past one month, each and every step taken by BCCI and CAC clearly indicates that all was done to allow Ravi Shastri walk into the backroom staff of national cricket team. How can a board extend the deadline to apply for the post when the cut-off date has already gone? This is the biggest question. Of course, the intentions were clear and even one who hasn’t followed the whole timeline can easily say that Shastri’s name was already written for the job.

The biggest question that could BCCI have bypassed view of Kohli? Ganguly especially mentioned about Kohli for not having a say in the matter itself indicates that they even knew that what is going outside but at last, CAC failed to come up with the befitting results by handing Shastri the job.

Is it comfortable to say that leaking the same news hours before Shastri was formally appointed a ploy? Could be because what was the need of Amitabh Choudhary, the secretary of BCCI, to come out in front of media sans any member of CAC and then tell the outside world that there is no official confirmation. And how can CAC announce the name in few hours after this PC? There are some facts in the matter which state that CAC or few members of the committee didn’t need Shastri but pressure from skipper was enough for them to follow the instructions.

But there are two sides of a coin. In one way or the other way, a captain should have a say in the appointment, as it is him who has to be the Head Coach at places on the tours, discussing the team strategies. If a person is imposed on him, then it’ bad for coach, skipper and Indian cricket. In no way, CAC imposed Kumble on team India last year, as Kohli was not the lone in-charge of the team and shared duties with MS Dhoni partially. So he had a limited say and having worked with Kumble earlier in RCB camp, Kohli would have had no issue with the former Indian skipper as well but in the end, the way his stint ended, it raised many questions that went unanswered.

So blaming that CAC bent in front of Kohli is also not true and Kohli having the whole say in the full scenario is also something which can be referred to the term vague.

Not to forget that one of the members in CAC namely Sachin Tendulkar was keen to have Shastri on the job, a thing which also created a rift between him and Ganguly – his closest friend. So there were voices in CAC who wanted him as a coach, as it was already in public domain that Shastri got positive signs from Tendulkar, the God of Indian cricket before having a gig at the job. Shastri was already assured of the job.

Since nothing was there in public domain regarding how the new coach was selected? What was the exact procedure? Did Virat Kohli join the meeting live? Was there pressure on CAC to appoint Kohli? These all are just questions that are left over when this sort of event happens and instead of going deep into the matter, let’s concentrate on the form of Indian cricket team, as whoever maybe the coach, a fan always wants the team to perform under whoever person he may be on the job. Shastri, Virender Sehwag or Tom Mody.

A tough and strong challenge awaits Shastri in future and still, he has the challenge to improve team India’s record on England and Australia soil. Team India will travel to South Africa, England and Australia next year and if team India is able to turn the table, then the pair of Shastri-Kohli will be hailed as the most successful pair in the history of cricket, whereas, the talks will be totally opposite if results do not match the expectations.
