Jason Gillespie Would Have Been A Fantastic Coach For India, Says Ryan Harris

The Story:

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie keenly looked forward to taking up Team India’s Head coach role. The Aussie legend also placed his contenders when the BCCI was seeking applications for the top job. Unfortunately, he was never a strong contender in the race which had former Team Director Ravi Shastri as the front runner.

Gillespie admitted to having a keen interest in working with Indian cricket team in near future.

“I think it would have been a wonderful job and I congratulate Ravi Shastri on getting that job, maybe one day in a couple of years that’d be something I’d seriously consider,” Gillespie was quoted saying cricket.com.au

The 42-year-old may have lost the race but has another exciting responsibility in his hands as he was appointed as the interim head coach of associates Papua New Guinea. The veteran carried an impressive track record as a coach having guided Yorkshire to back to back county championship in 2014 and 2015apart from successfully working as the coach of Adelaide Strikers in the BBL and Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.

Former teammate backs Gillespie

Former fast bowler Ryan Harris has backed Gillespie for the role stating that his senior mate could be the great option to guide India.

“Jason Gillespie would have been a fantastic coach for India. I have worked with him and played with him. From my experience, he would have been great in that role,” Harris said in a chat with Hindustan Times on the sidelines of the function marking 25 years of partnership between MRF Pace Academy and Cricket Australia.

The 37-year-old Harris is currently fulfilling the coaching role with the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane where he works with the National Performance Squad and the Cricket Australia youth squads.

Harris, a late bloomer, had reached the peak of his career when injuries began to hamper his chances before eventually forcing him to retire with just 27 Tests to his name. When asked about his transition from player to coach, Harris said the experience was highly rewarding.

“The transition has been great. It has been easier for me because of the presence of some older guys I have played against. They trust me, know me well. It is quite satisfying. I hope I can establish a good connection with the youngsters.”
