The PCB has nominated the ex Test skipper of Paksitan Zaheer Abbas to the post of the president of the International Cricket Council. However, Javed Miandad has questioned the decision and asked the board if he is the right person for the job.
Miandad explained that the post was ceremonial and that Abbas and his expertise would be of no use in that post. He added that he was confused seeing Najam Sethi change his mind at the last minute and send Abbas for the post. He said the Sethi was the right guy for the ceremonial post and that Abbas would not be right person for a post that has nothing to do with cricket. He felt that his expertise would be wasted.
Najam Sethi, the former PCB chairman announced his withdrawal from the nomination from the post in a letter sent to the ICC. He took the decision to honor the ICC’s decision to honor former players from the next year. He wanted to start the trend this year. Sethi asked for a former player to replace him in the nomination.
Miandad said that Zaheer is an icon in Pakistan cricket and that his influential position must be used effectively by the PCB. He also felt that the PCB was under extreme pressure to give former players a chance which made Zaheer sidelined for almost a year.
Miandad also complained that in his eight year term as a director, that he was not given enough power or authority to do something. He added that instead of having former greats like Zaheer or Majid Khan as Chairman or Chief Executive of the PCB, non-technocrats were calling the shots in Pakistan cricket and that it was unhealthy for the sport in the nation.
Miandad concluded saying that they should realize that the PCB is not just a money making organization and that it should be treated as an institution where everyone works for the improvement of cricket in Pakistan and help the former cricketers.
