Karun Nair named vice captain of Karnataka in a sans KL Rahul squad!

The Karnataka Cricket Association, on Saturday, named their 16 member squad for their first two games of the season. The team will miss out on the services of injured KL Rahul who has already missed the two Test matches and will probably miss the complete ODI series as well. KL Rahul is still recovering from a hamstring injury which he suffered during the first Test match of the series. Karnataka will also miss out on the services of Manish Pandey who will be performing the national duties for first few rounds of Ranji Trophy.

Karun Nair has been named as the Vice captain of the squad leaving behind Robin Uthappa, Stuart Binny, Abhimanyu Mithun for the same post. The selectors have called 2 uncapped players named Arjun Hoysala and Mir Kaunain Abbas in the squad. Pavan Deshpande, who last represented his state last year during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2015 has also been named in the squad. The inclusion of all the three players comes as a surprise as all the three players had mixed KPL season.

Karnataka will play their first fixture against Jharkhand at Greater Noida. They were scheduled to play their opening game at Chepauk, Chennai but the venue was changed due to political disturbances going on between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Their next destination will be Kolkata where they will take on Delhi at Eden gardens.

The Indian opener Gautam Gambhir will be making a comeback for the game against Karnataka. He will also take over the charge of the team from Unmukt Chand.

Karnataka last won Ranji Trophy in 2014/15 season, this was the second consecutive time when they won one of the oldest and premier domestic tournaments played in India. They even failed to qualify for the knockouts last season.

Karnataka squad for first two matches: R Vinay Kumar (c), Karun Nair (VC), R Samarth, Robin Uthappa, Mayank Agarwal, CM Gautam (wk), Stuart Binny, Shreyas Gopal, S Arvind, Abhimanyu Mithun, Abrar Kazi, Mir Kaunain Abbas, Pavan Deshpande, Arjun Hoysala, K Gowtham, Ronit More.
