Having finished rock bottom after a disastrous Indian Premier League 2013, the Delhi Daredevils management to clear the slate and start afresh having not retained anyway for IPL 2014. With a full kitty in budget, the Delhi Daredevils went all out to rope in their marquee signing and captain Kevin Pietersen who will be available throughout the IPL 2014 for the Delhi Daredevils.
IPL 2014 will be very significant tournament not just for Delhi Daredevils but also for their captain Kevin Pietersen. Having been dropped from the England cricket team, Kevin Pietersen has a lot of critics to prove wrong in this IPL 2014.Kevin Pietersen has been known not to be one who keeps mute and keeping his opinions in the closet and with a successful IPL 2014, his point will surely be proved to the last decimal.
Delhi Daredevils were one of the most consistent IPL franchises in the earlier editions of the tournament having made it to the play-offs in 2012 and also being the semi-finalists in the first two editions of the tournament, But the tag of ‘chokers’ has been stuff with them throughout all editions and IPL 2014 will be a good time to turn things around and settle the scores in their favor.
Kevin Pietersen and the Delhi Daredevils had a pretty decent phase in the IPL 2014 auctions in February. They utilized their whole budget in a very sensible way and formed a side which is arguably a very balanced side minus few tiny flaws.
Their main disadvantage would be their below par spin attack. When you are playing in India, or in this IPL 2014, Dubai too, the spin attack is of uttermost importance in order to have an edge over other teams. Delhi Daredevils have two knows spinners and with all due respect to both of them, if you are a batsman you’d not be too worried facing Rahul Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem. Having no international experience in their spin armory, Delhi Daredevils and Kevin Pietersen might struggle to keep their opponent’s score in check.
Having said that, their deficiency in spin attack is more than compensated by their illustrious batting line-up. With Quinton De Kock and Murali Vijay they have a very solid opening batting pair with both the South African and Indian international being T20 specialists. Dinesh Karthik would be #3 for the Delhi Daredevils and the mystery still surrounds him as to why the Mumbai Indians retained Ambati Rayudu over him.
Kevin Pietersen himself adds stealth to their middle order with J.P. Duminy and Ross Taylor also providing an option in the final overs. Nathan Counter-nile will be huge pivotal cog in their engine with the Australian all-rounder famous as a death over specialist in T20 cricket. Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat will complete their seam bowling attack and will add his variety to their bowling arsenal.
Overall, Delhi Daredevils look to be a fairly balanced side but will need all their individuals to perform whenever called upon if they intend to pose a serious threat to the IPL 2014 title but if there is one man who can deliver them that success then it’s that Englishman Kevin Pietersen.
