The recent tour of the Caribbean was a blessing for India, as it unearthed the true underlying potential of Karnataka batting star KL Rahul. The right-hander was simply superb in the test matches as he got starts even as the other batsmen found it difficult to get going. But it was his century in a T20I game at Florida which stunned the world as he put on a display of absolute master class. According to his Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Chris Gayle, Rahul could well match the class of Virat Kohli.
In a recent interview on the sidelines of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), Gayle spoke about Rahul and a few other issues. Below, are the excerpts from his interview.
Take on KL Rahul as an emerging star:
Rahul is a super player and has been scoring runs in all formats of the game. He is definitely one for the future. Rahul is someone who will be a match for Virat Kohli. Rahul works extremely hard on his fitness and on his game. He is definitely going great guns and all he needs to do is keep working hard and results will follow.
The success of cricket in the USA recently…
I thought the turnout in the US was fantastic. To have been able to organize games at such short notice was nice. The US can definitely be a great market for international cricket and we hope to see more international matches being held there in the future.
Why is West Indies a T20I powerhouse?
From the men’s point of view, Chris Gayle is there! That’s a huge impact. From the women’s team’s point of view, Stephanie Taylor is there – a fantastic player as well. Most of the players in our side play T20 competitions all over the world and have the experience needed to play in this format. We are a naturally gifted T20 side with some superb fielders and great all-rounders.
His take on TNPL:
I have had a lot of positive feedback in the last few days and I am sure it will be a good platform for youngsters to showcase their talent. I think such tournaments could help spot local talent and that’s good for the game.
