India and Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary had a close shave after being hit by an Abhimanyu Mithun rising delivery on the final day of his team’s Ranji Trophy cricket match against Karnataka, which the visitors won by 9 wickets at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
It was the first ball of the 38th over when Tiwary took off his eyes to Mithun’s bouncer which in turn hit the back of his helmet, much to the horror of the visiting Karnataka players. In a state of shock, all the players including Mithun from the High Court end went up to Tiwary and the Bengal physio also came in.
It was said that the ball had cracked up the helmet and Tiwary was forced to go for a replacement. Thankfully Tiwary had a brand new helmet after the tragic death of Phillip Hughes last month. He changed his helmet and continued to play on.
Tiwary didn’t last long as he was castled by Karnaaka skipper R Vinay Kumar soon after and was rushed to the hospital for MRI scans. Earlier in the tournament, Odisha’s Biplab Samantray’s short ball hit on the helmet of Gujarat batsman Bhargav Merai in a Ranji match at Tangi, Cuttack.
