Mashrafe Mortaza Advises Bangladesh Bowlers To Bowl Short To Virat Kohli

Ahead of the one-off Test between India and Bangladesh at Hyderabad, Bangladesh’s limited-overs skipper has advised his bowlers on the likely method to counter Virat Kohli.

Kohli has been in the form of his life off late, with two mind boggling knocks against England in India’s previous Test assignment. Kohli’s masterclass of 235 at Mumbai was among the finest innings by an Indian batsman, as he controlled his instincts perfectly and batted like an artist with precision.

Mortaza, while speaking to the media back home in Bangladesh, was of the view that it was of no use to target Kohli outside the off stump. A couple of years ago, a weakness had developed in Kohli’s game, where he seemed to be vulnerable to deliveries outside off stump. Kohli back then was far tentative but now, has rigorously worked out on eradicating that flaw from his batting.

Instead of targeting the corridor of uncertainty, Mortaza has advised his bowlers to bowl short to India’s test captain. The Bangladesh veteran, however, added that in order to be effective with the short pitched stuff, the ball will have to be pitched accurately.

“England and Australian bowlers targeted off stump to stop Virat Kohli. We also did that earlier. In T20 matches, I bound him in off stump and took his wicket. But in the recent past, Virat Kohli played exceptionally well in the off stump deliveries against England in their home soil,” Mortaza said.

“That means he has already surpassed that weakness. He is making it harder to take his wickets for the bowlers. But nothing is impossible. If I would be there, I will target the off stump or throw short balls to him.”

“It could be possible to take his wickets delivering short balls. But it has to be accurate. After all the bowling should be accurate. My advice to the pacers are, an effective short spell of 3-4 overs is more important than delivering a long spell of 6 to 7 overs,” Mortaza concluded.
