Match Referee Javagal Srinath to Examine Venues for ICC Accreditation in India

Former India bowling spearhead Javagal Srinath has been given a task to look over the new cricket venues at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Barsapara in Assam for the slated fixtures.

It’s pertinent to point Srinath is the part of ICC’s Elite Panel, as a match referee from India and has further played a significant role in grooming the talented youngsters back home in the recent past. The step was taken after the two new venues were allotted for the 20-over games by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on August 1.

Interestingly, without the sanction of the ICC, the two new venues in Assam and Thiruvananthapuram were mapped out by the BCCI for the upcoming Twenty20 Internationals against Steven Smith-led Australia and Upul Tharanga-led Sri Lanka.

Owing to the functioning of venues, they will be given an accreditation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) if it would meet the requirements and standard of the global cricket body.

The Mysore-born 47-year Srinath is bound to visit the new venues at Lucknow and Raipur for the same process which is further subjected to the execution of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) while chalking out the proper plan. The visit of Srinath will be premeditated by M.V. Sridhar, who’s the General Manager of the Cricket Operations for the national cricket Board.

After making his debut way back in 1991 against Pakistan at Sharjah, Srinath featured in 229 ODIs and 67 Test during his 12-year-long international career. The former right-arm fast bowler bagged 315 wickets in 227 innings of 50-over format, as he eventually claimed 236 scalps in 121 innings of the longer version of the game.

However, without the say-so accreditation allotting the games stands null and void which further requires a proper planning and eventually.

On the other side, in Kochi, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will witness the Under-17 FIFA World Cup happenings. Between September and December, India is scheduled to play 23 international games. At their backyard, the record-games in the season would include 11 One-day Internationals, nine Twenty20 Internationals and three Tests against Sri Lanka.

In a bid to cover all the venues, BCCI has been at the forefront to draw the crowd to the different stadiums, as the stadiums are vying for the Test games as well. It is expected that the different new centres would get a couple of games during the foreseeable fixtures after the traditional venues have had hosted most number of games in the recent past.

During the Strategic Plan, ICC in the recent past declared the inspection, monitoring and accreditation would remain the part of setup when different venues would undergo renovation or reconstruction. In December 1997, the venue-accreditation system and approval process were introduced by the executive committee of the elite-body.
