McGrath eyes new target ahead of the Pink Test in Sydney

The most successful fast bowler of all time Glenn McGrath, who has given some horrendous time to the batsmen all over the world is now chasing a target of his own which is very close to heart. McGrath founded ‘McGrath Foundation’ in 2008 after he lost his first wife, Jane due to breast and bone cancer to provide McGrath Breast Care Nurses to women suffering from this severe disease across Australia.

The foundation was built with the idea to offer one nurse, and now it has got 118 nurses who support 56,000 families, and we need 79 more to win the match, admitted McGrath.

Recalling his past days, the master of accuracy admitted that his wife Jane never wanted it to be about her.

“She wanted it to be about the nurses and the people going through breast cancer. She would be amazed where we are (today) … very humble and really proud,” he adds.

Talking about his wife, McGrath admitted that Jane said that having a breast cancer nurse was like having someone to hold your hand through one of the worst nightmares of life.

The foundation has seen a phenomenal success with pink becoming metonym to Australian cricket. McGrath credits former teammates and foundation staff Sara Leonardi-McGrath, who happens to be his new wife and his children for the help.

“I just think I’m doing what anyone else would do in the same situation. I do view myself a very lucky person with what I’ve been able to do in my life, who I’ve had in my life. There have been tough times without a doubt but I think everybody has their own battles and challenges,” the Aussie bowler said.

Carol Wilde, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, said that the help offered by McGrath Foundation is indelible. The nurses took care of everything from making sure I was able to make doctor appointments according to children’s routine to being there at chemo appointments. They were the ones with whom I could talk about everything.
Post-retirement, McGrath’s wardrobe contains a lot of pink as the official colour of the foundation is ‘McGrath Pink’ with touches of ‘aubergine.’ Recently, McGrath urged all the Australians to support the Breast Cancer Nurses by organizing a Pink Stumps Day.

“It’s about bringing the magic of the Sydney Pink Test out to any local area around Australia putting on a cricket match, proudly wearing pink, and raising funds for the McGrath Foundation,” he said at the launch of the event in Sydney.

We don’t put a nurse on until we have three years funding ($390,000) upfront so we can guarantee that nurse for a minimum three years,” he says.

Approximately it costs $12.5 million to $13 million a year to fund the nurses, for which there is federal government support. The Sydney Pink Test is slated to start from January 5th, which is the fifth Test match of the Ashes series. The main event of the Pink Stumps Day is scheduled to take place on February 17. Every people who enrol at pinkstumpsday.com.au gets a pink cricket kit including stumps, a bat, ball, bails, bandana, zinc cream, a tape and a collection box – all in pink.
