New Zealand bowlers thrashed the mighty in-form Australian batsmen during the first ODI at Auckland on Wednesday. New Zealand beat Australia by 159 runs in the first match of 3-match series Chappell-Hadlee Trophy 2015-16.

After winning the toss, Australia decided to field first. New Zealand was unchanged from the last ODI squad against Pakistan which was played just 3 days ago at the same ground. Australia made three changes from their last ODI against India at SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground). Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson and Josh Hazlewood replaced injured Aaron Finch, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon.

New Zealand skipper and opener Brendon McCullum began the innings in his style as he hit 44 runs in 29 balls. After that, New Zealand lost two quick wickets of Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson (0). Then, opener Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls put 100 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. Guptill (90 runs off 76 balls) failed to get his 11th ODI hundred as he fell just 10 runs short when he was run-out in the mid-innings. Nicholls scored 61 runs off 67 balls and when he was departed (231/5 in 35.2 overs) it was looking that New Zealand will easily reach at least 330 in 50 overs.

But the lower middle-order batsman failed to capitalize, and as a result, New Zealand finished at 307/8 in 50 overs.  Mitchell Santner played an important knock in the lower-order as he remained unbeaten at 35 of 39 balls. Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood, James Faulkner and Mitchell Marsh took 2 wickets each while John Hastings managed to take his only wicket in the form of Corey Anderson.

Chasing down the big total, Australian top-order and top middle-order collapsed in the front of New Zealand fast bowlers Trent Boult and Matt Henry. Australia were 41/6 in just 9 overs as both the bowlers grabbed 3 wickets each at that time. At the end, Australia only managed 148 runs (all-out) in 24.2 overs.
