Mitchell Johnson signs for Perth Scorchers

After a lot of speculations, former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson on Monday(August 2) has finally signed for Big Bash League(BBL) franchise Perth Scorchers for the sixth edition of the tournament. The left-arm pacer will be participating in BBL for the first time in his career. He was previously signed by Brisbane Heat but could not participate due to playing for his national team.

Expressing his excitement over the deal, the 34-year old said:”It’s exciting to be able to play Twenty20 cricket. A lot of the boys have told me about the Big Bash and how good it has become, not only from a spectators point of view but also from a players point of view. It’s really good to play and it’s only getting bigger and bigger.”

Johnson is not playing international cricket anymore but he brushed aside any doubt of coping up with the game.

“Four overs will do me. There is not such a focus on recovery and ice baths and meetings and I might be able to just bowl fast and have some fun,” he added.

Johnson, who lives in Perth, said the Scorchers were the only team he was interested in.

“I was never going anywhere else and always wanted to stay here and be part of the community,” Johnson said. “To be able to play for the Perth Scorchers, where I live and where I’m based, is perfect for me.”

Meanwhile, he also took a slight dig at former Australian spinner Brad Hogg,  who abandoned Perth to sign with the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming season.

“Hoggy always used to text me before we played in the IPL to remind me to bowl at the stumps … We will just have to see about that,” Johnson said.

He also expressed his excitement to share the ball with young bowlers of the team and said that he would look to mentor them.

“I’ll hopefully be able to guide these young guys in the right direction,” Johnson said. “I want to be a mentor and bowl alongside these guys. I want to be involved in the coaching side of things which has become a bit more of a focus for me. I also want to enjoy it and have some fun.”

The new season  of the BBL will start in December.
