Mitchell Starc Wants To ‘Swing’ The SG Balls On India Tour

Australia fast-bowler Mitchell Starc has said he is hopeful of getting the SG balls which will be used during the four-match Test series in India. The first Test will kick-start from February 23 in Pune.

The 27-year-old Starc has shown liking for both conventional and reverse swing with the SG balls as former Australian greats opined the visitors’ longer format tour would be quite challenging on spin-friendly wickets.

“It’s been a while since I have been over there to play red-ball cricket, it’s been four years. It will depend on how the ball is reacting, whether it’s swinging conventionally or reverse,” Starc was quoted as saying by PTI.

Listed as ICC’s No. 10 bowler in Test Rankings, Starc is practicing with different balls with the Australian squad at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai.

“I’m sure there’ll be times when we will be called upon to bowl a few extra overs in a spell but probably a lot of short spells as well,” Starc added.

Starc stated they’ll go with a different game plan against a formidable Indian side as Virat Kohli’s men currently lead the table charts in Test cricket.

As hosts have quality spinners in the squad, Starc added there are many similarities between both the Asian countries.

In the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, Starc bagged 24 wickets at an average of 15.16 as he eclipsed past his countryman and former Australian fast-bowler Dennis Lilee’s record of 23 wickets which he set in 1979-80 in Ashes in three Tests.

“Some little changes in terms of batting plans but a lot of similarities in the fact that it’s going to turn a lot against us. So, a lot of similarities (from Sri Lanka) to India,” Starc said.

Starc has enjoyed success with the Kookaburra ball at home in the recent past, but his major focus is to give his best as the bowling spearhead of Australia – to yield results with the SG ball in India.

However, Starc expects his skipper Steven Smith will use him in short spells before admitting slow bowlers could be more effective than pacers.

“I guess it depends on the spinners, if they’re taking wickets or not. It’s obviously up to Smithy. It’s probably a bit different to how we are used back home,” Starc remarked.

In 2013, Starc was dropped for the second game (four-match series) after going wicket-less during the first Test in Chennai.

He was then selected for the third Test in Mohali after the homework-gate incident took place.

However, Starc was ruled out of the final Test at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi after suffering an ankle injury.

Starc, who has made his Test debut in December 2011, against New Zealand has played 34 Tests for Australia in which he has bagged 143 wickets at an average of 28.29.
