Mithali Raj Says the 2005 World Cup Was More Memorable Than the 2017 Edition

Team India Women’s team captain Mithali Raj who led India to the final of the recently concluded Women’s World Cup said that reaching the 2005 World Cup final was far more satisfying to her than the 2017 one because the team didn’t have access to the best facilities and making I to the finals was a far bigger achievement. India surrendered their opportunity to lift their maiden World Cup title in 2005 when they lost the final to Australia by 98 runs in Centurion.

12 years later, the Indian eves defeated the Aussies quite comprehensively in the semi final to progress to the final but faltered in the final hurdle to surrender yet another opportunity to lift the coveted title. It was a mere pressure of the final which prevented the Indians from lifting the trophy. Mithali Raj said after the loss that the match was in their grasp but it was the pressure of a final which resulted in their defeat.

In an interview with the ANI Mithali said, “The first one is memorable because that time we had no facilities, we didn’t had access to best of facilities. We were not under BCCI. We didn’t have any support from the government. So, to make it to the finals was a far bigger achievement.”

“Considering that run up to the (2017) World Cup, we had matches, we had tournaments. We also have BCCI’s support from 2007. The quality of players is far better now because of the access to the best of facilities, trainers, physios, we have access to the academies. So, we can train better.”

“This was important in terms of visibility of women cricket because not many know about the standard of women cricket and who all play for the team, what they do in the team. In that sense, this plays a major role. But memorable for me, as a captain, is 2005,” she added.

Mithali said that she is not looking way too forward as the next World Cup is too far away.

“The next ODI World Cup is too far now. But the next T20 World Cup and the next two seasons of international series is what I am looking at right now,” the Indian captain signed off.
