Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, before the start of the warm-up game against England, stated at the toss that he will be captaining his Indian Premier League franchise Rising Pune Supergiants and lead his state team Jharkhand if things go as per plan for him in future.
The 35-year-old wicketkeeper, Dhoni is leading India A against England at Cricket Club of India in today’s first warm-up game at Brabourne Stadium, in Mumbai.
While speaking at the toss for leading India A team, Ranchi-born Dhoni said that it’s his last match as a skipper for Men in Blue. The match has also pulled off a decent crowd for Dhoni’s farewell match as a skipper.
“It’s a special game, my last game as [India] captain but I’ll be captaining in IPL & probably Jharkhand as well”, Dhoni said to Laxman Sivaramakrishnan at the toss.
Dhoni has been at the helm for nine-odd years for India. He has stepped down as a captain on January 4 to make a way for impressive Virat Kohli.
“It’s just a warm-up game and fans are still excited to see me. This shows how much they love me. I thank them all,” Dhoni added.
Selectors, in the past, have shown some great confidence in Dhoni’s leadership qualities, who equally did not let them down after providing some brilliant performances, winning the major titles which included 2007 Twenty20 World Cup, 2011 One-day International World Cup followed by the Champions Trophy in 2013.
Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh’s combination in the middle-order would give India an edge while batting freely and to score some quick runs.
The middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane will lead India A in the second warm-up match which is scheduled on January 12.
