Former Indian Captain Mohammad Azharuddin, during an interaction told the PTI that Dhoni as a captain has so much pressure on him but if he does not perform well in the matches then selectors need to think about him. Azharuddin added that Dhoni is no longer the player he used to be, to make an impact, he needs to come up the order and perform well, and once the captain do what he is required to do other follows him.
India lost their first ODI against South Africa in Kanpur by five runs, despite of Rohit Sharma scoring 150 and Ajinkya Rahane’s 60. Dhoni failed to finish of the match. When asked Azharuddin said that Indian side lacks finisher. He added that the word finisher is overrated. According to Azhar everyone needs to have match finishing skills. He said that if you are batting at 70 and the team requires 50 runs to win you can’t leave this task on someone else and he added that if you are batting at crease then it’s your duty to finish the game for India.
Azharuddin also commented on the Indian team management’s decision to bench Rahane for Twenty20 series against South Africa. He said that it was most unfortunate thing that Ajinkya Rahane had to sit out during T20 series against South Africa. He also commented that Ajinkya Rahane is far better player than Ambati Rayudu. He was shocked on how come management can bench their best batsman after Kohli.
