In the latest development, Indian opening batsman Murali Vijay on Monday, has been ruled out of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka which will kick start with the first Test of the three-match series on July 26. The reports suggested Vijay, who has played a pivotal role for India in the Test format, has been one of the consitent batsmen over the years for India, will be replaced by Shikhar Dhawan, who had a merry-run in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy.
However, it is yet to be ascertained what actually has ruled him out of the 16-member squad, but the official Twitter account of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has termed an injury as a reason as of now.
As India is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka, the visitors will being their long tour with a two-day practice match which will begin from July 21 in Colombo, before the first Test will be played in Galle, on Wednesday (July 26).
Men in Blue-led by Virat Kohli are also scheduled to play five One-day Internationals and a solitary Twenty20 International.
It’s pertinent to mention, Vijay was ruled out of the second Test against Australia in March, after nursing the shoulder injury, in the first Test in Pune, of the four-match Test series.
Moreover, Vijay returned back in the third Test in Ranchi, where he smashed 82 runs, before scoring 11 and 8, in the fourth and final Test in Dharamsala of the Border-Gavasakar series.
India went on to clinch the series by 2-1 after clinching the Dharamsala Test by eight wickets, under the leadership of stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane when Virat Kohli was nursing shoulder injury.
Earlier, the squad was announced for the three-match Test series which saw left-handed batting sensation being overlooked by the selectors alongside Karun Nair, who earned the fame after smashing triple-figure mark in Chennai against England.
Vijay has featured in 51 Tests in which he has registered 3,408 runs at an average of 39.62.
The 33-year-old Chennai-born batsman has smashed nine hundreds and 15 fifties in 87 innings of the longer format.
