The Kandy-born 45-year-old Muralitharan stated Ashwin has been phenomenal with the ball and his numbers are an indication of his significance particularly in the longer version of the game while adding Chennai-based born has been at his best.

“Definitely, he is the best spinner in the world at the moment,” Muralitharan maintained.

The legendary bowler Muralitharan remarked the 31-year-old Ashwin has been on a role for India.

Interestingly, Muralitharan further stated Ashwin could make a return to the 50-over format while donning the Men in Blue while believing the off-spinner might deliver his in the limited-overs cricket.

“He is not in the One-Day team but hopefully he will return and do wonders in the shorter formats also,” Muralitharan added.

On Monday, November (27) with the wicket of Lahiru Gamage, Ashwin completed 300 wickets in 75 Test innings, as Virat Kohli-led India further won the second Test in Nagpur on the fourth afternoon of the fixture to take the unassailable lead of 1-0.

Moreover, the ace off-spinner Ashwin has further become the fastest bowler to claim 300 wickets in 54 Tests.

Ashwin broke the record of Australian veteran Dennis Lillee, who achieved the milestone in 56 Tests.

Ashwin went past the record which was set in 1981, to go past some veterans of the game in a nutshell, as Muralitharan took 58 Test to go past 300-wicket mark during his international career.

With Ashwin setting his sight on further accomplishments it would be subsequently interesting to see whether Ashwin would become the fastest to 400 wickets or 500 wickets respectively.

“He (Ashwin) is hardly 31-year-old and can play for another 4-5 years at least,” Muralitharan asserted.

However, Muralitharan reiterated it would also depend on Ashwin how he shapes up to keep his body fit for the cricket.

“But it will also depend on how he performs and remains injury free. Only time will tell as it will be very hard for him after 35,” Muralitharan remarked.

Muralitharan has also praised India for outstanding effort and delivering well under the dynamic leadership of Virat Kohli.

“India is a very good side and I rate them very high. You can’t take credit away from India by saying that Sri Lanka is a weak team. They are doing really well in every format,” Muralitharan concluded.

Concluding, India has shown great consistency while revealing it’s sad to see the Sri Lankan cricket going doing the hill.
