Najam Sethi All Set To Succeed Shaharyar Khan As PCB Chief

After the present chief of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan made it clear that he doesn’t want to continue at the post due to his health issues, Najam Sethi is likely to be approved as the new PCB chief.

At the Annual General Meeting of PCB on Thursday, Sethi’s name was a unanimous choice. The decision was part of the three resolutions that were passed during the PCB’s AGM in Lahore.

Sethi will take over once Shaharyar’s term ends in August this year. The current PCB chairman had already revealed that he wasn’t interested in contesting for the post again.

Shaharyar was unanimously elected to lead the PCB by the board of governors in August 2014. He had intended to resign with immediate effect – as his tenure ends only in August 2017 – but with the ICC in the middle of restructuring its constitution and Shaharyar’s support is being vital to the cause, he had decided to continue at the helm of the PCB until the ICC annual conference ends in June.

According to PTI, the AGM made a recommendation that Sethi will be given the Pride of Performance award by Pakistan government for his service and contribution to Pakistan cricket.

“Perhaps pre-empting the situation, Sethi managed to get this resolution passed which basically confirms that he is very popular in the cricket board,” an insider is quoted by PTI.

At the AGM, Sethi also made new announcements regarding the third season of Pakistan Super League. He said that eight matches during the third season will be held in Karachi and Lahore, both cities hosting four matches each. Regarding the sixth franchise in the PSL, he said that some 30 parties had submitted bids to buy the franchise.

“The second resolution was adopted for a Pride of Performance award for Mr Najam Sethi for his significant contribution in Pakistan’s cricket especially staging of PSL’s final in Lahore,” the PCB said in the media release.

The other resolution was the appreciation of Shaharyar’s services to Pakistan cricket. The members gave the Chairman a standing ovation as he chaired the meeting for the one last time.

Sethi has been chairman of the board, several times in an interim capacity between 2013 and 2014. That was during a period of administrative turmoil at the very top of the board when Sethi and Zaka Ashraf alternated as board heads. His position as chairman of the Pakistan Super League has also helped extend his reach into various departments of the PCB including media, social media, marketing and commercial interests.

In the meeting, Sethi revealed his plans to bring international cricket back to Pakistan after addressing the concerns of the visiting teams.
