Never Thought Karun Nair Would Score A Triple Century: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag knows a thing or two about triple centuries in Test cricket. After all, he is the first Indian to score a triple century and one of the only four players to have crossed the 300-run mark twice. Well, just like the fans, the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ was pleasantly surprised to see Karun Nair become the second Indian batsman to enter the 300-run club.
The Karnataka batsman, who was included in the playing XI only because of Ajinkya Rahane’s injury, stole the show in the ongoing fifth Test in Chennai with a monumental knock of 303*.
Speaking exclusively to Aaj Tak, Sehwag expressed his delight to see the youngster doing well but at the same regretted his absence from the commentary box during that moment.
He said:“It really feels great to see a youngster bat so good. The only regret that I have is that I wasn’t there in the commentary box at Chepauk to witness the knock in person. I would’ve really enjoyed it. I just pray that now that he’s got a triple ton, it should not take an Indian another 12 years to score the next triple hundred.”
Sehwag said although he doubted whether Nair would score a triple ton during the Chennai Test, he never had any doubts about his ability.
“Nobody thought before this game that he (Nair) will make a century but he’s gifted us a triple ton. He looked good to break my record. But I understand that match situation was such that India had to declare. India winning the Test is more important than an individual record. However, I knew that he had got a 300 plus score in first class cricket and has the capability to do it in Test cricket too,” he concluded.
