New Zealand coach urges umpires to protect the pitch

2-0 down in the three-match series against India, New Zealand are in danger of losing the third and the final Test also after conceding a mammoth 557 in the first innings. The visitors have failed to put up a good show with the bat and if they want to save this Test or register an unlikely win, they know that they will have to give their best. So far, they have found it extremely tough to counter the Indian spinners and it will be really interesting to see their approach against Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The pitch will undoubtedly play a vital role and New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is well aware of that fact. New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is reminding umpires to protect the Indore pitch after India’s Ravindra Jadeja was sanctioned for causing damage to it on the second day of the third Test. Jadeja was penalised half of his match

Talking to the journalists after the end of day’s play, Hesson urged the umpires to be extra careful to protect the pitch after Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was penalised for causing damage to it. Jadeja was fined 50 percent of his match fees by the ICC for “causing avoidable damage” while batting. The visitors were also awarded five penalty runs for Jadeja’s offence. Jadeja was warned repeatedly by umpire Bruce Oxenford for running down the middle of the pitch while batting.

“In countries where the wickets deteriorate like this, the umpires have to be very decisive around how they look after the middle of the wicket. There are rules in place and they need to stick to those,”  Hesson said.

“Footmarks are building, as they tend to do, but the body of the surface is still very good. I’m sure the umpires will maintain that.”

He also praised Indian batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and  Virat Kohli who added a mammoth 365 runs for the third wicket.

“We have a very good blueprint of how to bat on that surface. Our challenge is to try and replicate something similar,” he said.

He was also delighted with his team’s effort of not conceding easy runs.

“At no stage did we roll over and give soft runs. I thought it was a high-quality day’s Test cricket. We contributed to that with our bowling,” Hesson said.

In reply to India’s huge total, New Zealand finished the day on 28 for no loss.
