New Zealand vs Australia 2017: Kane Williamson Reflects On Series Victory Over Australia

Pretty much like the first ODI, the Chappell Hadlee Trophy ended at Hamilton in a thrilling fashion as hosts New Zealand defeated Australia by 24 runs. The Kiwis were driven by a chanceless century from the veteran Ross Taylor, who equaled the tally of Nathan Astle of scoring the most number of ODI tons by a New Zealand batsman. Before Taylor, it was Dean Brownlie who stole the show with a fine half-century as he set the platform for a big first innings score.

Needing 282 to win, Australia were derailed by the fury of Trent Boult, as the left-arm seamer demolished the Kangaroos with six wickets. The slow left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner tied Australia down, while Boult reaped in the rewards.

Post the series victory, skipper Kane Williamson was delighted and lauded the team for a fine show.

“Both games were fairly similar. The wickets were similar, on these grounds you’re never out of the game. Australia showed why they’re a top side, at times we felt we had them, but they kept coming hard. Credit to our guys for sucking up the pressure,” Williamson said.

Williamson was in awe of Ross Taylor and heaped praise on New Zealand’s record holder.

“Ross Taylor’s was a brilliant hundred. The way he rotated the strike was superb. He hardly faced any dot balls, was able to build partnerships with the top order and the lower order.”

Trent Boult was named the Man of the Match, and the seamer looked back at his poor tour of Australia a few months ago.

“It felt pretty good, one hell of a game,” Boult said. “We were a few runs short, but we still finished nicely with Mitch. The conditions are familiar, I’ve played some cricket here. Couple of deliveries jumped and gripped, it was a two-paced wicket. This win is satisfying. We had a couple of tough lessons on tour in Australia couple of months ago.”
