New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2016/17: Kane Williamson, Neil Broom Shine As The Kiwis Whitewash Hapless Visitors

As the two teams ventured into the third and final ODI at Nelson, it was just the matter of inevitability as New Zealand thrashed Bangladesh to wrap up the series 3-0. This series victory is bound to be a great relief for the Blackcaps, after they endured a similar fate against Australia not so long ago.

For Bangladesh, it’s time to reflect on their core as the loss follows an unwanted trend. After once again being provided with a solid foundation by their openers, the middle-order capitulated in no time as the hosts gained the upper hand. Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes carried on their good form and registered a stand in excess of 100 for the first wicket. Tamim registered a decent half-century as he made proper use of the conditions.

However, as soon as the first wicket fell, there was a complete mess as the middle-order batsmen failed to ride on the foundation set by openers. The disheartening aspect stood in the fact that seasoned campaigners like Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah too couldn’t carry on.

As a result of a lackluster performance in the latter half of their innings, Bangladesh could only get to a below par 236-9 in 50 overs. For New Zealand, all bowlers were among the wickets, with Mitchell Santner conceding just 38 in 10 overs.

The run-chase was never going to be a headache for the Kiwis as skipper Kane Williamson finally struck form with a fluent unbeaten knock of 95. Comeback man Neil Broom looked well set for a second consecutive ton, but just as he neared the mark, he was dismissed on 97. All-rounder Jimmy Neesham and Williamson then finished off the formalities as New Zealand won the game with more than eight overs to spare.

From Bangladesh’s end, pacer Mustafizur Rahman had a great outing as he conceded just 32 runs in 9.2 overs and picked up two wickets.
