New Zealand vs India 1st Day 5: Five talking points

India defeated New Zealand by 197 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. In the morning session, Luke Ronchi and Mitchell Santer provided some resistance before Jadeja picked the wicket of Ronchi. After the lunch break, Ashwin took 3 more wickets to finish with 6 wickets in the second innings.

Here we look at the five turning points of day 5.

  1. Santner and Ronchi gave hope to New Zealand

New Zealand started the 5th day on 93 runs for 4. Mitchell Santner and Ronchi played some wonderful strokes off the spinners. Luke Ronchi attacked Ashwin and Jadeja. Mitchell Santner also provided good support to Ronchi. Both of them played for an hour and tried their best to draw the match. Luke Ronchi completed his half-century. After the drinks break, Luke Ronchi played against the spin and was dismissed for 80. In the first hour both of them put on 65 runs. Both of them put on 102 runs for the 5th wicket.

  1. Mohammad Shami displayed a master-class in reverse swing

As the sixth wicket partnership between Watling and Mitchell Santner was going well, Virat Kohli brought on Mohammad Shami. He bowled with great control and troubled the New Zealand batsmen with reverse. He dismissed Watling with reverse swing and then in the next over Mark Craig was dismissed with a great display of reverse swing. Mohammad Shami picked 2 important wickets which made the work of spinners easy after the lunch break.

  1. Ashwin the star with ball

Mitchell Santer and Luke Ronchi attacked the Indian spinners, especially Ashwin. Ashwin could not take any wicket in the first session. He bowled a lot of short balls and allowed the New Zealand batsmen to play attacking strokes. After the lunch break, he picked the wicket of Mitchell Santner with a beauty of delivery. After he clean bowled Ish Sodhi and finally dismissed tail end batsmen Neil Wagner to finish with figures of 6 for 132.

  1. Mitchell Santner contribution with the bat

Mitchell Santner provided tough resistance for New Zealand. His defensive technique was solid against Ashwin and Jadeja. He played the spinners with an attacking approach and did not allow them to settle in line and length. After the fall of Luke Ronchi wicket, Mitchell Santner continued to impress and completed his half century. He tried his best but was finally dismissed for 71 by a beauty from Ashwin.

  1. New Zealand’s tail failed to contribute

Like in the first innings, the New Zealand’s tail failed to contribute much. After the fall of BJ Watling wicket, Mark Craig was dismissed for 1 run. Ish Sodhi played 38 balls and scored 17 runs. New Zealand tail was not up to the mark and led to massive defeat in the first match. In the first innings too New Zealand were bundled out in quick time.
