New Zealand vs India 4th ODI: Five turning points

New Zealand beat India in the fourth One-day international at Ranchi just a few minutes ago. After restricting the New Zealand team to 260, the Indian batsmen failed to put consistent partnership which led to India’s defeat. Here we look at the five turning points of the fourth ODI
- Good opening partnership by New Zealand openers
After winning the toss the New Zealand team elected to bat. Martin Guptill and Tom Latham gave the team a flying start as both players looked in great form. In the first five overs, New Zealand scored 42 runs without loss. Martin Guptill and Latham continued to put pressure on the Indian bowlers. At the end of first 10 overs, New Zealand scored 80 runs. New Zealand lost their first wicket at the score of 94 in the 16th over as Tom Latham was dismissed by Axar Patel.
- Great comeback by Indian bowlers
After the first 10 overs, when New Zealand were on course for scoring 300 runs the Indian bowlers made an excellent comeback to restrict the run flow and also pick crucial wickets. Mishra was the pick of the bowlers for India who picked 2 wickets and did not give too many runs. Axar Patel, Kedar Jadhav bowled brilliantly and never allowed the New Zealand batsmen to score runs easily. The New Zealand team were able to score 260 runs at the end of 50 overs.
- New Zealand batsmen failed to contribute
At the start of 36th over New Zealand were 184 for 2 with Willamson and Taylor at the crease. After that, the New Zealand batsmen lost wickets at regular intervals which made the life tough for the visitors. Kane Willamson was out for 41 and after that, every other New Zealand batsmen struggled to time the ball. They were able to score only 76 runs in the last 14 overs.
- Partnership between Kohli and Rahane
After the early fall of Rohit Sharma wicket, Kohli and Rahane played some wonderful shots of the New Zealand bowlers. They were looking at ease and put the bad balls away for boundaries. After the first 10 overs, India was 50 runs. After that, both players looked in good touch and made the batting look easy. Both Rahane and Kohli put on 79 for the second wicket.
- New Zealand bowlers exploited the pitch
After the second wicket partnership between Kohli and Rahane was broken the New Zealand bowlers exploited the pitch bowling consistent line and length. Santer, Sodhi, Southee, Trent Boult were superb. They picked wickets at regular intervals. The pick of wicket taker for New Zealand was Southee who picked 3 wickets and the rest of bowlers also contributed. Despite the last wicket partnership between Kulkarni and Umesh Yadav, India lost the match by 19 runs.
