New Zealand vs India 5th ODI: Five turning points

India defeated New Zealand by 190 runs at Vizag just few moments ago. After scoring 269, the New Zealand batsmen struggled against Indian spinners and were dismissed for 79 runs. The Indian team won a series after 2 years under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

  1. Rohit Sharma coming back into form

After successive four failures, Rohit Sharma showed his class by playing an important knock of 70 runs. In the first 10 overs Rohit Sharma struggled to time the ball scoring 5 off 21 balls. In the first 10 overs India scored 45 for 1. He then took off by smashing Neesham for a six which gave him the confidence. Rohit Sharma was injured and then started to blast the New Zealand spinners for boundaries. He completed his half century off 49 balls. Rohit Sharma was struggling with his injury and took on New Zealand bowlers. He was dismissed playing a big stroke for 70 runs.

  1. Partnership between Dhoni and Kohli for the 3rd wicket

After the wicket of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Kohli put up an excellent 3rd wicket stand. Dhoni struggled against the left arm spin of Mitchell Santer and Ish Sodhi. At the end of 30 overs India were 154 for 2. Dhoni was severe on Ish Sodhi and created pressure on him by hitting big strokes. Both of them put on 50 runs in 61 balls which steadied the innings. Before Dhoni was dismissed for 41 runs, they had put on 71 runs. At that time the score was 190.

  1. Axar Patel and Kedar Jadhav partnership gave India a competitive total

After the loss of Virat Kohli wicket in the 44th over for 65, the youngsters Kedar Jadhav and Axar Patel took their chances with both hands. Both the players looked in superb touch hitting lovely shots off Trent Boult and Tim Southee. In the last few overs, both of them took the charge and played important knocks for the team. Both Axar Patel and Kedar Jadhav put on 46 runs in 6.3 overs for the 6th wicket. Axar Patel was dismissed off the second last ball for 24 in 18 balls. Kedar Jadhav remained not out on 39 off 37 balls. India final total at the end of 50 overs was 269 for 6.

  1. Amit Mishra’s brilliant spell

Amit Mishra was brought at the bowling crease in the 14th over. He bowled with great control and did not allow New Zealand batsmen to score runs easily. He dismissed Ross Taylor and BJ Watling in one over and then took the wickets of Neesham, Southee and Sodhi to finish with figures of 5/18 in 6 overs. It was a great display of bowling by Mishra who made the life tough for the New Zealand batsmen. Axar Patel took 2 wickets, while Jayant Yadav took 1. Bumrah and Umesh Yadav also took 1 wicket each. Indian team bowled out New Zealand for just 79 runs. For his brilliant bowling he was awarded the man of the match award.

  1. New Zealand’s tragic collapse

At the start of 15th over , New Zealand were 62 for 2. After that New Zealand batsmen struggled to cope with the Indian spinners. Kane Williamson was the top scorer with 27 runs. Watling, Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi were dismissed for 0. Martin Guptill was too dismissed for 0. Tom Latham and Taylor scored 19 each. From 62 for 2, New Zealand were bowled out for 79 in 23.1 overs. With this India won the series by 3-2.
