No future for Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions

In a 78 page reply to the questions asked by the media-rights bidders of the Indian Premier League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has said that it is open to the 10-team format in the cash-rich league but at the same time said that they are not seeing any future for Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions. Both the franchises made their debut in the league this year as two-season replacements for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who are suspended for two seasons due to the involvement in illegal betting.

In the answer given to about 259 questions that were released yesterday (October 15), the cricket board has said that Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will be back in the 2018 editions of the IPL and it will only be an eight-team competition from there on.

“Should there be an expansion, the league will not have more than 10 teams and 76 matches at any stage,” the BCCI has said.

“There will be eight teams and 60 matches from 2018,” the report added. As per the report  all original eight teams – Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mohali besides Chennai and Jaipur – will be part of the league from 2018.

Talking to Mumbai Mirror, one of the bidders said” “They have told us that they will ensure eight teams and 60 matches every year.”

To a question asked about the return of the suspended teams, the board said that they will return to the league only if they fulfill all the conditions.

As quoted in Mumbai Mirror, an official of one of the two franchises said: “We knew it was going to be for two years initially but let’s see how things turn out. Let’s first see what happens to the BCCI on Monday (in the Supreme Court). Then we will decide our future course of action.”

Meanwhile, the decision on the media rights is supposed to be taken on October 25 if everything goes as per the plan.
