NZ vs BAN 2nd Test: Hosts Whitewash Bangladesh With Comfortable Win
Jan 23, 2017 at 1:25 PM
Bangladesh batsmen once again, like in the first Test, came a cropper in the second innings as New Zealand thrashed the visitors by 9 wickets in the second Test.
Earlier, a 98-run knock from Henry Nicholls helped the hosts to surpass Bangladesh’s first innings score of 289 and take a 65-run lead before getting bowled out for 354.
Kane Williamson’s men were in danger of conceding a lead when Bangladesh had reduced them to 256 for 7 but Nicholls batted sensibly with the tail-enders to help his team take a healthy lead.
The form Bangladeshi batsmen were in and the pitch getting easier to bat on, a draw was looking like a probable result.
However, the Bangladeshi batsmen, just like the second innings of the first Test, let their team down with a disastrous batting display as they were dismissed a paltry 173.
Tamim Iqbal (8), who was leading the side in absence of Mushfiqur Rahim, returned to the pavilion with the scorecard reading only 17. Soumya Sarkar (36) and Mahmudullah (38) kept the Kiwi bowlers at bay for some time but the floodgates opened once the former was dismissed by Colin de Grandhomme.
Bangladesh kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 115 for 8 before a 51-run partnership between Taskin Ahmed (33) and Kamrul Islam Rabbi (25*) took the score over 150-run mark. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 173, setting New Zealand a target of only 111 runs.
The target was never going to cause any problem for the home side and as expected, the hosts chased down the total with utmost ease. Jeet Raval and Tom Latham set the tone for the chase with a 56-run stand before Grandhomme hit four sixes en route to his 15-ball 33 to take New Zealand home in the 19th over.
Brief Scores:
Bangladesh 289 (Soumya Sarkar 86, Shakib Al Hasan 59; Tim Southee 5-94, Trent Boult 4-87) & 20/1 trail New Zealand 354 (Henry Nicholls 98, Ross Taylor 77, Tom Latham 68; Shakib Al Hasan 4-50, Mehedi Hasan 2-59) by 45 runs.
