ODIs Where Zimbabwe Was Better Than India

Team India must be happy with their performance against Zimbabwe this month. The men in blue sealed the ODI series 3-0 first and then won the T20 series too by winning the final thriller under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Whereas Zimbabwe only managed to win a single game in the series!

There was a time when greats like Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Heath Streak and Alistair Campbell used to be a part of the team who had the ability to change the scenario of the game. Although, the situation is not the same today but Let us recall some great moments from Zimbabwe point of view against Team India.

Feb 7, 1997: Zimbabwe won by 3 wickets

Zimbabwe’s first win against India came on Feb 7, 1997 during Standard Bank International One-Day Series. After winning the toss, the men in blue opted to bat first. It seemed to be a wrong decision as the entire team fell at 216. Nobody managed to score even a half-century. Tendulkar and Azharuddin were the top scorers with 41 & 44 respectively.

Zimbabwe was ready to register their first win against India but firstly they had to fight from rain. When rain stopped, the revised target was 171 in 34 overs which they achieved with 2 balls left. Evans & Strangs did the heroics from their ends, thus gave Zimbabwe their first ever victory against the Indians.

India lost their 4 overs in batting after Zimbabwe’s innings due to slow over rate. This made them feel the pressure and the men in blue lost the battle by 3 runs. Except Sadagoppan Ramesh, no other batsman scored a fifty.

March 13, 2002: Zimbabwe won by 6 wickets

Douglas Hondo

Bengal Tiger ‘Saurav Ganguly’ was the captain this time. After India won the toss, they opted to bat first. With the great batting line-up, it was looking like the team can easily set a huge total. But, it happened the other way. The opposition was into the match right from the beginning. Douglas Hondo did the damage with his 4 wickets and India managed to score only 191.

Alistair Campbell and Grant Flower had set the stage for their team with their 71 and 49 respectively. Just for the loss of 4 wickets, they achieved the required target in just 44.2 overs. Douglas Hondo won the man of the match award for his brilliant figures of 4 for 37 in just 8.3 overs.

May 28, 2010, Zimbabwe won by 6 wickets

Brendon Taylor

Known as India’s one of the best finishers, Suresh Raina, was the captain in this series. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first. The Mumbai star Rohit Sharma scored a wonderful 114 with the help of 6 fours and 4 sixes. A sensible 61 from Ravindra Jadeja in the end gave Indian team everything they wanted. Team scored 285 for the loss of just 5 wickets.

Who would have thought that Zimbabwe had a different mindset that day? With the brilliant opening stand of 88 between Masakadza and Taylor, Zimbabwe was desperate to start the series on a winning note. They chased down the target of 286 with 10 balls remaining.
