Openers in focus as selectors to announce the team for season opener series tomorrow

Will selectors drop Shikhar Dhawan for his poor form? Can Gautam Gambhir make a comeback? Should Mayank Agarwal be rewarded for his good run? Selecting Gambhir will be a backwards step?

Probably these are the questions brewing in the mind of people anxiously waiting for the Indian squad that will be announced tomorrow. The selectors and the captain will table a meeting in Mumbai to select the 15 member squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. The Test series will mark the start of the long home season which consists of 13 Test matches that are to be played until next year.

Tomorrow’s selection meeting will clearly tell us whether selectors are looking for an option for Dhawan or not. Selection of Gambir in the squad will mean that selectors still trusts in the policy of horses for courses but his no-selection can also be the end of the road for him. Choosing Mayank Agarwal over Dhawan and Gambhir can be a big step and this will surely be the final warning alarm for Dhawan as well.

Personally, my view is that selectors should stick to Dhawan and Gambhir and one of them should be given a go with Agarwal being asked to play few rounds of Ranji trophy and present his case there for selection. The simple reason behind my logic is that Mayank has been an inconsistent performer in past few years. A god performance in just 2 or three rounds of Ranji trophy will induce selectors to call him up to the national squad and then Mayank can proudly walk in the squad. Though, he has performed well in Duleep trophy but still he there are certain areas that are needed to be worked upon. He can work upon them in Ranji Trophy and can come up again.

Coming to the choice between Gambhir and Dhawan, as a keen follower of Indian cricket and especially Delhi cricket I strongly feel that Gambhir should be given a go instead of Dhawan. Gambhir is a master of playing spin. His addition to the team will strengthen the batting line-up of the Indian team; he can also be a godfather for a youngster like KL Rahul who can learn a lot from Gambir.

The experience and quality which Gambhir holds will be quite crucial for the Indian team. his addition in the team is the need of the hour.

On spinning tracks in India, Gambhir will be more successful rather than Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan does not possess1 that patience which is needed on Indian pitches. Here a batsman have to make an effort to score each run, Dhawan probably do not have the quality to hold himself. It has already been proved that Dhawan easily surrenders whenever tested by bowlers; also he is going through a rough patch and is currently a benched player.

He has already lost his seat to KL Rahul in Test and T20 format. It’s time for Dhawan to play domestic cricket and get some match practice there. Playing domestic will only help Dhawan as in Gambhir absence he will be the one who will lead the Delhi team. This will add an additional responsibility on his shoulders. We have often seen players paying more attention to their game whenever they are handed an additional charge. May be this additional charge can bring best out of Dhawan.

The main competition for that one spot will be between Dhawan and Gambhir with Agarwal on the bank of selection river. Selection of Gambhir over Dhawan will add to the twist and competition whereas choosing Dhawan over Gambhir can be the end of the road for Gambhir. If the selectors dumps both of them for Agarwal, then it will be a start of a new era but it is to be noted that non-selection neither of two will not be an end of the road for Gambhir.

The consent of captain Kohli will play a huge role in team selection. Incidentally, both Gambhir and Dhawan state mates of Virat Kohli. It’s confirmed that his advice will be the key behind the selection of any of these two.

Rest of the team will remain same with Shardul Thakur and Stuart Binny missing out as the squad will be trimmed from 17 members to 15 members.

Probables:         Probable squad: Virat Kohli (C), Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, R. Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
