Pakistan vs World XI 2017, 2nd T20I: Thisara Perera, Hashim Amla Help Tourists Level the Series

After a horror bowling display in the first T20I, Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera made amends with a sizzling knock to power World XI to a convincing series-levelling win against Pakistan in the second T20I on Wednesday (September 13).

If Hashim Amla set the tone for the chase with his calm and composed 72-run knock, it was Perera’s 19-ball 47 runs innings which took the visitors over the line with a ball to spare.

Set a target of 175 to square the series; a resurgent World XI side aggressively began the innings with Tamim Iqbal and Hashim Amla scoring 30 runs off the first three overs. The dangerous looking partnership came to an end when Tamim was brilliantly caught at the short fine-leg by Shoaib Malik off the bowling of Sohail Khan.

Pakistan then made further inroads in the game when Imad Wasim castled Tim Paine for ten to leave the tourists reeling at 71 for two in the 10th over. The match drifted more towards Pakistan when Mohammad Nawaz accounted for skipper Faf du Plessis on the last ball of the 14th over with World XI then needing 69 runs off the final six overs to square the series.

However, the game turned on its head when Perera joined Amla in the middle. The left-handed batsman began his onslaught in the seventeenth over when his six off Sohail Khan brought down the equation to 41 runs off the last three overs. Perera hit a six in the following over, but World XI was looking well out of the contest after Amla conceded three dot balls in the crucial over.

With 33 runs needed off the last two, World XI had their task cut out, but Perera rose to the occasions and amassed 22 runs off the penultimate over to give his team a real chance. The Sri Lanka star began the 19th over with a six which followed by a two, wide and a couple of more doubles before the hard-hitting batsman slammed another six.

The equation was finally down to six of the last two balls, and Perera sealed the game in style by hitting a gigantic six to keep the series alive.

Earlier, Babar Amaz once again top-scored for the hosts, scoring 45 to help Pakistan post a challenging 174 for six in the allotted 20 overs. Ahmed Shehzad also played a handy knock of 43 before Shoaib Malik’s 23-ball 39 runs knock helped the hosts to finish the innings on a strong note.

Brief scores:

World XI 175 for 3 (Amla 72*, Thisara 47*) beat Pakistan 174 for 6 (Babar 45, Shehzad 43, Malik 39, Thisara 2-23) by seven wickets.
