Parthiv Patel Reaches 10,000 First Class Runs, Wished by Virender Sehwag

Out of favor, Indian wicket keeper Parthiv Patel reached a significant landmark in his career as the southpaw reached 10,000 first class runs during the Duleep Trophy match between Indian Red and Indian Green. Parthiv came into the crease at the fall of the first wicket and needed five more runs to reach the elusive figure. On three he beautifully drove Krishnappa Gowtham towards the cover for a boundary to reach the landmark. It is a significant milestone which will be a satisfactory achievement for the youngest wicket keeper to play Test cricket for India.
The southpaw broke into the national team in 2002 during the Test series in England as a replacement for the injured Ajay Ratra and made an immediate impression with his fluent batting skills. He also looked a safe keeper behind the stumps and looked a player for the future. He impressed in the subsequent Australia tour and made decent scores.
He was the elevated as an opener of the Test team during India’s first series in Pakistan after 15 years, and the southpaw had good returns, but still, the three figure mark eluded him. In the future years, it was the emergence of a certain Mahendra Singh Dhoni which destroyed the careers of any potential wicket keepers in the national team.
With Dhoni in the team, it was practically impossible for anyone to make a comeback as he was a far superior bet than anyone else in the country. He then became a master at domestic cricket and has been the captain of the state side Uttar Pradesh for a long time now. Though already 31 years old, he still looks a baby faced lad who burst on to the scene just a few years back.
It is sometimes hard to believe that Parthiv has been around for the last 15 years. He made a comeback in the Test team pretty recently during the Test series against England earlier in the year during the absence of regular keeper Wriddhiiman Saha and scored some pretty handy runs opening the batting but was criticised for his ordinary keeping. He is there on the list of reserve keepers in the country at the moment and might get a chance in the national team if Saha is injured or rested.
The southpaw upon reaching his landmark was wished by the former Indian swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag. Taking to his twitter handle Sehwag wrote “10,000 Mubarak PP urf CC !”. Sehwag has been a teammate of Parthiv from the early days and has been a good mate. Parthiv also replied by saying “Thank you Virupa.”
