PCB Tribunal Begins PSL Spot-Fixing Trial Against Tainted Players

After the three-member tribunal committee was set by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the bench headed by Justice Asghar Haider begins on May 15 which has started to hear PSL spot-fixing charges levelled against as many as five players during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League Twenty20 competition in the United Arab Emirates.

The reports revealed that cricketers could face life bans if they’ll be found guilty of breaching the PCB’s Code of Conduct according to national board’s Ant-Corruption Unit.

After all-rounder, Mohammad Nawaz had been issued a notice for breaching the article of PCB’s constitution, the opening left-handed batsman Sharjeel Khan was also available at the hearing when a tape was played by the investigators in which he revealed that he met a bookie, but denied of doing any wrongdoing at the time of the meeting.

Following the meeting, PCB has recently announced the committee which further included former PCB chairman Tauqir Zia and followed by former Pakistan team skipper and wicket-keeper batsman Wasim Bari.

Moreover, Sharjeel in his declaration pointed out playing dot-balls is not linked to spot-fixing after PCB’s lawyer Taffazul Rizvi revealed Khalid and Sharjeel have accepted their fault by meeting bookie.

“He also accepted that man was linked to fixing and that whatever was decided in that meeting panned out in the agreed manner,” Rizvi was quoted by Express Tribune.

As the witnesses are expected to present the evidence before the tribunal committee, Sharjeel’s legal representative Shaigan Ijaz stated he is looking forward to and is expecting to see his client given clean chit in the fixing saga case.

After the inaugural match of the second edition of PSL came under the scanner, Sharjeel played two dot balls when he scored just a single for what PCB’s believes the latter has received the money.

Earlier, the spot-fixing scandal rocked the Pakistan’s league which further saw five Pakistan international cricketers were ‘provisionally’ dismissed following the report from national boards ACU.

Khalid Latif, Shahzaib Hasan, Nasir Jamshed and Nawaz are also facing the charges for violating the anti-corruption code.

However, if they would be found guilty in their respective hearing, the players could further face the brunt of five-year minimum ban followed by life bans if prosecutors would find those players have crossed over the line.

Considering the fact, they will also face the hefty fine after failing to report the PCB over the approach of the International business syndicate, who are trying to corrupt the games.

In the similar case, lanky fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was handed over a six-month ban which is further followed by six-month suspension and he was charged with the fine of PKR one million ($10,000) in March, this year.
