Today’s first match of the day will see Kolkata Knight Riders face Kings XI Punjab at Eden Gardens from 4.00 PM onwards. With Kings XI Punjab out of the competition they would like to upset the momentum of Kolkata Knight Riders, but hosts Kolkata Knight Riders would like to continue their winning streak. KKR are on 13 points and have moved closer to the playoffs.
Previous Year Clashes
The first time they met was on the 26th April at Abu Dhabi. It was a low scoring match. Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field. The Kings XI Punjab innings did not start off very well losing 3 wickets for 58. The batsmen were not able to score runs easily. The top scorer for Kings XI Punjab was Sehwag with 37 and rest of batting struggled. At the end of 20 overs Kings XI Punjab scored a modest 132 for 9. While chasing KKR they lost wickets at regular intervals and struggled throughout the innings. The top scorer for KKR was SuryaKumar Yadav with 34. KKR was bowled out for 109 in 18.2 overs and Kings XI Punjab won 23 runs.
After 15 days they met again but this time in Cuttack. It was a relatively high scoring match. Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field. In the Kings XI Punjab the top order got starts and never converted starts into big scores. The top scorer for Kings XI Punjab was Sehwag with 72. Kings XI Punjab scored 149 for 8 in 20 overs. While chasing Uthappa and Gambhir started off to a great start scoring 68 off first 7 overs. The only man to get out was Uthappa who scored 46. Gambhir and Manish Pandey ensured that KKR won the match. KKR won the match by 9 wickets with 12 balls to spare.
Robin Uthappa did begin well again in the previous match against Delhi Daredevils. He played some wonderful strokes and attacked the spinners, fast bowlers. He scored 32 off 31 balls and led to a good total which they defended easily. Against KXIP he would look to cash in and play a big innings to continue his form.
Andre Russell did not contribute with bat in the previous match. He came at 6 and just played 5 balls. In bowling he did succeed by taking 1 wicket giving away only 24 runs. Against KXIP he needs to show his power with bat and also contribute the ball also.
This tournament has been poor for Captain Geroge Bailey. His team is out of contention for the playoff. In the previous match against RCB he dropped a crucial catch of Gayle and he took the charge. Against KKR he needs to play with free mind and must contribute with the bat.
Sandeep Sharma has been only shining light for Kings XI Punjab in the tournament for Kings XI Punjab. He has bowled brilliantly with the new ball and bowled Yorkers in death overs. Against RCB he went for 41 runs but picked 2 wickets also. Against KKR he needs to provide early wickets to put pressure on the top order.
