PSL Fixing Saga: Players Must Respect The Game, Says Kumar Sangakkara

Former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently leading Karachi Kings in the ongoing second edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) has hailed the efforts of the PCB for their commendable efforts to keep cricket clean.

“Players must feel a responsibility to respect the game,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.

The 39-year-old left-handed batsman Sangakkara, who himself has been a law student, stated there has to be the transparency across all formats before adding the sport should be corruption free.

“The vigilance of PCB and its ACU prevented corruption [in the Pakistan Super League (PSL)] by suspending two players of Islamabad United [Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif],” Sangakkara said.

Matale-born Sangakkara also praised PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit for investigating the matter with in no time to keep the cash-rich league going.

Sangakkara was a part of the Quetta Gladiators during the inaugural PSL edition in 2016.

“It’s a bit sad but for us as players, we have to get on with the game and we have got a great responsibility to play ensure that we respect the game and we ensure that we never leave room for any sort of corruption in cricket,” Sangakkara revealed.

However, the wicket-keeper batsman termed the fixing incident “unfortunate” before showing satisfaction with authorities for doing a great job in a bid to avoid corruption.

“The authorities in place are doing a great job. It is unfortunate that such a thing happened,” Sangakkara added.

So far, three Pakistan international cricketers have been suspended after the news surfaced about the linking of players with the international syndicate, who were in Dubai – to corrupt the PSL games.

The suspended cricketers include opening batsman Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif from Islamabad United team.

The PCB has also sent show-cause notices to both players following their suspension.

During the investigation, Sangakkara’s teammate Shahzaib Hasan and Quetta Gladiators’ Zulfiqar Babar were cleared after the allegations were levied against both of them.

“We backed him [Shahzaib Hasan] a 100 percent on the field today,” Sangakkara said on Shahzaib.

However, out-of-favour left-handed batsman Nasir Jamshed was suspended from all forms of cricket after breaching PCB’s anti-corruption code, according to its press release.

It’s pertinent to mention Jamshed was not a part of any PSL franchise.

The investigation over the PSL fixing saga is still going on with left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan being questioned several times by the ACU.
