R. Ashwin has been ruled out for the remaining matches of ‘Freedom Series’ against South Africa for suffering a side strain while fielding off his own bowling. Ashwin failed to finish his over after delivering four balls of the fifth over. He did not take the field after taking the injury. BCCI announced veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s name as his replacement for the last four matches.

“After making a detailed assessment of the injury, the BCCI medical team will confirm the time frame required for Ashwin to fully recovery from the injury. Harbhajan Singh has been included in the Indian squad, and will join the team before the second match of the series in Indore”, BCCI said in its press release.

He has been the best spinner for India in the last two years. He took 60 ODI wickets in 42 matches and is the second highest wicket-taker among the spinners after Imran Tahir of South Africa. His absence in the next four matches, notwithstanding, will make India suffer when South African are playing well at Indian conditions. The offie took the wicket of Quinton de Kock, who was the 140th victim of his career. In his 4.4 over Ashwin conceded only 14 runs. Captain MS Dhoni called him in the 9th over of South Africa’s innings as the visitors’ opening pair has already accumulated 45 runs in 8 over. Ashwin gave the breakthrough that helped India to check South Africa’s flow of runs.
