There has been a news since today morning about Rahul Dravid being appointed as the batting consultant. Finally, there has been a confirmation about the rumour. Dravid, the former Indian Captain and one of the greatest batsmen of all times is not appointed as the batting consultant. But he is rather requested to interact a few sessions with the Indian batsmen.
So, Rahul Dravid will have a few sessions with the Indian team’s batsmen ahead of their first Test against England which starts on 9th July in Nottingham. It is also reported by BCCI secretary, Sanjay Patel that Dravid has not been appointed as the batting consultant by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Also it is heard that Indian skipper, MS Dhoni alongwith coach Duncan Fletcher had approached the BCCI to have Dravid in England for a few interactive sessions with the young batsmen with lack of experience of the English conditions. The Wall readily agreed to BCCI’s request.
Patel spoke to PTI about the matter a few time earlier. He said, “Let me clarify at the outset that Rahul Dravid has not been appointed batting consultant or in any other capacity. Since he is a legend and has enjoyed stupendous success in England, the team management wanted the boys to interact with him before the first Test.”
BCCI secretary also added, “Subsequently MS and Duncan requested me to find out whether Rahul could spare some time with the boys ahead offirst Test at Nottingham. I spoke to Rahul and he was gracious enough to agree. We want him to share his vast experience. He has had so much success in England that no one can tell the current lot better about technique and temperament than Rahul.”
Dravid has been one of the most successful Indian batsmen at overseas. He also played some fantastic knocks in England and also scored 6 centuries in tests in the English soils. He played a total of 13 tests in England and scored 1376 runs, which is a milestone indeed. But Dravid’s last tour here in 2011 was a sad one and India were humiliated by 4-0 in a 4 match test series.
Patel was also being asked about the fact that whether there could be any contractual obligations with Dravid. Patel replied to that by saying, “Absolutely not. It’s an interaction arranged on request of team management. There is no one Test or two Test thing. Rahul will be in England at that time. Also being a mentor at IPL’s Rajasthan Royals, he has had a positive influence on youngsters. We hope for the same as India embark on a tough series.”
Dravid’s experience is definitely needed by this young Indian team as six of their batsmen in the likes of Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t yet played a test against England in England. And they lack experience in that.
Let us see what impact does the 41-year old legendary cricketer be able to create upon the Indian team. As things stand, Indian team is expected to put up a better show this time than their last time.
