Ranji Trophy 2016/17: Mumbai Take Lead Versus Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand Owns Day 3 Against Gujarat

Mumbai vs Tamil Nadu –

Mumbai owned day three of the Ranji Trophy semi-final as thy edged past  Tamil Nadu with a lead of 101 runs at the end of the day. At one stage, Mumbai looked in deep trouble as they lost their first wicket of the day in form of Shreyas Iyer, who was looking set for a big score but he was dismissed for 36 runs. But then came the moment when experience came into play as Abhishek Nayar held one end with Aditya Tare sticking his feet on the other end, ensuring a first innings lead for Mumbai before being dismissed. Nayar was the first one to be dismissed followed by Tare.

Tailenders added to the pain of Tamil Nadu as Balwinder Singh Sandhu (jr.) and Shardul Thakur contributed with the bat as well. Sandhu made a contribution of 32 runs whereas Shardul Thakur showed his batting skills by smashing his fifth first-class half-century. These runs were none less than a bonus for Mumbai whereas it was a big pain for Tamil Nadu.

The last wicket of Shardul Thakur marked the end of the day and with that Mumbai’s innings.

Brief Scores: Tamil Nadu 305/10 trail by 101 runs vs Mumbai 406/10 at Rajkot.

Gujarat vs Jharkhand:

It was all Jharkhand on day 3 as they extended the lead.

Jharkhand, who was trailing by a margin of 194 runs at the start of the day, had a great start as Ishank Jaggi along with Ravikant Shukla shared 70 runs for the sixth wicket, thus moving Jharkhand closer to the first innings lead.

Kaushal Singh, the batsman who came into bat after Shukla’s wicket along with Jaggi put his team on brink of first innings lead as at the time when he was dismissed, Jharkhand was just 10 runs away from the lead. Ishank Jaggi did the formalities before being dismissed with just a lead of three runs in the bank before Gujarat bowlers did no let more spill of runs and folded Jharkhand for 408.

Gujarat, who were just 18 runs behind from Jharkhand had a psychological disadvantage as they had conceded lead to the opposition team and the results were seen in the first over when their in-form batsman Priyank Panchal was run out with a score of just one. It could also prove to be his last innings in this year’s Ranji Trophy if Gujarat fails to win the game.

Bhargav Merai and Samit Gohel then steered the team close to 100 before three quick blows from Shahbaz Nadeem set the day for with Gujarat losing the grip over the game. They are now just 82 ahead of Jharkhand with six wickets in hand. The responsibility now falls on skipper Parthiv Patel and Manpreet Juneja to survive the first session and move the team ahead and they will need a lead of minimum of 300 to defend. On the other hand, Jharkhand will again set eyes on Shahbaz Nadeem to come up with quick wickets so as to finish the game tomorrow itself.

Brief Scores: Gujarat 390 & 100/4 lead by 82 runs vs Jharkhand 408/10 at Nagpur.
