Ranji Trophy 2016/17: Shreyas Iyer, SuryaKumar Yadav Leads Mumbai Reply To Gujarat Lead Of 100

Mumbai Ranji team were on the back foot until the end of day two trudged ahead of Gujarat on the day three riding on an all-round performance. The first thing Mumbai players did was to wrap up Gujarat innings in the first hour of the day, keeping a check on Gujarat as they could only take a lead of 100 runs, which in a five-day game is not a big threat for the team assigned to clear the lead.

The day started with the wicket of Chirag Gandhi who failed to add a single run to the team’s total on day three. Rush Kalaria too rushed back to the pavilion as Balwinder Singh Sandhu trapped him in front of the stumps. The last two wickets could just add 15 runs to the total as Shardul Thakur and Balwinder Singh Sandhu shared one more wicket each to blur the hopes of Gujarat of taking a big lead.

Gujarat could just add 37 runs on day three and lost four wickets in the first hour of the day. Mumbai once again showed that they are the real Khadoos army.

When asked to bat, the defending champions made an aggressive start as they were playing at a run-rate of nearly 6.00 before Akhil Herwadkar edged one behind the stumps on a score of 19.  Prithvi Shaw, who was leading the charge soon made a way back to pavilion and soon it looked like Mumbai has lost the momentum but then came the moment when Shreyas Iyer held the fort along with SuryaKumar Yadav and shared 127 runs for the third wicket, to first clear the debt and then earn some lead over Gujarat.

Iyer was looking more aggressive than SuryaKumar Yadav. He was pushing the score ahead whereas Yadav was holding the fort in order to not let any wicket fall down. Iyer’s wicket during the last in the day was a big blow but skipper Aditya Tare did not let Gujarat take any other advantage in the remaining overs of the day as he and SuryaKumar Yadav played last eight overs of the day wisely, handing Mumbai an advantage in the day.

Mumbai now lead by a margin of 108 runs with still seven wickets in hands and if they are able to add 150-200 runs in the bag, then it will be a tough task for Gujarat to chase it down as in that case, spinners will come into play on day four and five.

Brief Scores: Mumbai 228 & 208/3 (Shreyas Iyer 82, SuryaKumar Yadav 45*; Chintan Gaja 3-54) lead by 108 runs vs Gujarat 328 at Indore.
