Ranji trophy to face a blackout this season

It is not the first time, it has happened before as well, history is repeating itself and the sufferers are the ardent fans who love to watch and follow the grassroots level of the game i.e. Ranji Trophy.

The long home international season of Indian cricket has come as a bane for domestic cricket as in the latest news it is learnt that Ranji Trophy, the oldest tournament in the history of Indian cricket, which still continues to be one of the barometers for selection of a player in Indian cricket team, will not be telecasted this season due to action-packed season of international cricket in next 6 months.

2 out of 4 Star channels, the official broadcaster of Indian cricket, are dedicated to the international cricket and rest of the 2 channels will be telecasting other games like Football, Kabaddi etc making no room for Ranji trophy which means a total blackout for 82 years old tournament.

From past many years, Star used to televise at least one of the matches out of twelve games that are played simultaneously but still used to skip one or two rounds whenever there was an event going on. An international event of any sport used to be a bane for Ranji Trophy but this time, it looks like there will be a complete washout with no hope of telecast of any of the rounds.

This will add to the misery of domestic cricket as with this decision of Star, it looks like BCCI’s decision to organise Ranji games on neutral venues has backfired. Reason?

Playing Ranji games at neutral venues will keep local fans at bay as earlier we used to see some local boys cheering and shouting to gain the attention of stars but now how and why will they cheer for an unknown player? Is it possible? Safe to say a big ‘NO’? Surely, with this decision of no telecast and matches being played at neutral venues has added to the woes of domestic cricket. It also hinders the success of a domestic player who is trying hard to get a place in Indian cricket team. Though the new bunch of selectors have said that they keenly watch domestic cricket too but we can only draw a conclusion when we see then practically preaching of what they said. Till then, it can be said that through activities we are pushing the future of domestic cricket in the dark.
