The third Test may not have gone India’s way but a list of records fell after the conclusion of the match. Off Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had an underwhelming performance in the match but he still managed to snap a record. The 30-year-old today equalled Dale Steyn’s record for the most number of wickets in a single season.
With the wicket of Glenn Maxwell in the second innings which came late in the final session, Ashwin levelled the record held by the South African fast bowling legend which he had registered during the 2008/09 season. The off-spinner, however, might slightly rue the chance that he could go ahead of Steyn in this match itself.
At the start of the match, he had 76 wickets to his name after enjoying a splendid run with the ball. However, Ashwin, who was a star in the fourth innings in India’s series-equalling win at Bengaluru, was unable to create the same impact in the just concluded Test and was only able to get unsatisfying figures of 1/114 and 1/71. Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed 5/124 and 4/54, in the match stands at the third position with 67 wickets in this season.
The Ashwin – Jadeja pair has been vital in India’s dominance at home and currently hold the top spot in the Test rankings jointly. While Australia has been an exception, in the past; teams like England, New Zealand and South Africa have completely failed to owe to their joint efforts and handed India landslide victories.
