Till the day BCCI was to officially announce the Head Coach of Indian cricket team, Virender Sehwag was the front runner for the job.
As per the reports, his power point presentation was quite impressive and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was pretty much impressed with it. He was the only candidate to appear for the interview in person, which added strength to his case and in all probability, he was confirmed as the Head Coach but it was the demand of Sehwag to bring his support staff along with him was something which went against him. As per a report in TOI, Sehwag was keen to bring his former Delhi teammate Mithun Manhas as the assistant coach of the team and also wanted Amit Tyagi as the physiotherapist. This demand of Sehwag has come out as a reason for him been not given the job, as Shastri was pretty much comfortable with the present support staff and had no issues with the present coaches continuing them even if comes to the fore.
Due to demands put down by Sehwag, the CAC decided to go for Shastri, as they did not want to change the composition of Indian team backroom staff. Shastri was given the charge and along with him, Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan were also given the jobs of consultants on tour to tour basis.
Though Shastri also wants his man Bharat Arun as the bowling coach of Indian cricket team, it looks like he is waiting for the dust to settle and waiting for the right time when he can put in front Arun’s name for the job and get him back as the bowling coach. Shastri will travel along with team India for the tour to Sri Lanka. There are still doubts whether Zaheer will be there with the team or not, as his contract is for 150 days and months or weeks when he will be with the team are not mentioned by BCCI. As of now, it is only Rahul Dravid who will not go to Sri Lanka, as he will be there with India A in South Africa.
Though BCCI is yet to come up with an updated schedule for the tour to South Africa due to Australia A side backing out and is it yet to be known whether the tour will be preponed or postponed.
