Mumbai batsman, Prithvi Shaw who earned a huge spotlight when he slammed a record 546 while playing for Rizvi Springfield School in an interschool game in the Harris Shield here last year. Now, once again he came into picture after someone put their money in that promise of the talent.

Prithvi, still only 14 year old, has landed a deal worth Rs. 36 lakh with cricket equipment manufactured by SG, which in past has been used by the greats like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag endorsing the brand.

Prithvi will receive the following sponsorship for a period of six-years, which basically means that the Mumbai teenager, who comes from a normal background, now can focus solely on the game, neglecting about financial security.

Confirming about their deal with Prithvi, Paras Anand, SG’s marketing director, told TOI on Wednesday at Meerut: “Prithvi has been using our equipment for the last three to four years. He came into the limelight when he got the world record last year.

Anand said that Makarand Waingankar, mentor of Prithvi and one of the present Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) consultant, has reported about the young talent and played a crucial role in the signing the 14 year old with world class kits.

We were told about Prithvi’s potential by Makarand Waingankar, who is a known talent-spotter. We learned that he belongs to a modest background. Our association with him will provide him the support that he needs. Besides getting to use our world-class equipment, he won’t have to worry about travelling and coaching expenses,” SG’s Anand said.

When asked for the reason for them to invest heavily on Prithvi in an early age, Anand said, “We believe Prithvi has the potential to go on to play for India. That is why we wanted to sign him up on a long-term basis.

Taking on his signing, Prithvi told the TOI, “SG has been providing me with the playing kit and bats for the past four-five years, when I hadn’t even signed up with them. SG’s support will help me play cricket comfortably.”

Talented kids at this age need financial security. I am thankful to Paras, and happy for Prithvi. I hope he makes optimum use of this,” said Waingankar.
