Revealed:IPL’s viewership in numbers

The Indian Premier League has for a long time been the most viewed annual sporting event in the country.

With the innovation in the game and various changes that the sport goes through every year, the IPL that is conducted at this time every year has only become more and more popular.

According to the data from BARC India, the 9th season of the tournament has impressions of 145.75 million for its first week.

Impressions are a measure of a number of viewers at any given point of time during the telecast of the match and the first 7 games played in the tournament have attracted 93% more viewership compared to the same time last year.

In the previous year, 113 million viewers were registered after the first week while this season, it has gone up to 218 million for the first 7 games only.

The ratings (viewership) continue to be steady and strong, though we can’t compare it to last year (because the measurement universe was different). At an all-India level and in the urban territories too, the tournament is holding strong,” said Rohit Gupta, president – network sales, SPN.

The highest-rated match of the tournament in its first week was the clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, which managed 24.137 million viewers at any given point of time during the telecast.

The second most watched was the one between Mumbai Indians and the new team, Rising Pune Supergiants, which attracted 24.12 million impressions.

However, in Sony Max, the fifth match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians caught viewers’ interest and recorded the highest ratings of 18,169.

With up to 3 channels relaying the games, Sony Max remained the most preferred channel for viewers, followed by Sony Six and Sony ESPN.

Sony SIX delivered a total viewership of 243 Million, while Sony ESPN delivered 100 Million according to reports.

However, it was also reported that the broadcasters are not happy with the figures that seem to be fading away and are not really sure about how the tournament will be viewed in the middle phase.

It is believed that most of the loss in viewership was due to an overdose of T20 cricket in the country and that the tournament needs its own talking points to get back to being the best.
