Ricky Ponting, arguably one of the best captains the game has ever seen was picked up at the IPL auctions by the Mumbai Indians in 2013. Though, he played only 6 games and performed below expectations which forced him to sit down for remaining matches, he has been in touch with the Mumbai Indians for the last 2 years. He was the batting consultant in the last years IPL.

Sources reveal that Ponting might also replace John Wright as the head coach of Mumbai Indians or he can also become a mentor. However, Anil Kumble has done quite a lot as a mentor as Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2013 after his appointment. Although, Anil Kumble did some goofs in the Player Auction last season when he released players like Maxwell, Johnson, Akshar Patel and Dwayne Smith, it is unlikely that he will be the one to be axed.

John Wright’s significance as the head coach of Mumbai Indians is declining. Anil Kumble has been given more importance than him and appointing Ricky Ponting might be a solution to this problem.

24 hours ago, Jacques Kallis became the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, so only time will tell us what role Ponting gets.
