Before the selection of the Indian team for the limited overs series against Sri Lanka, there were high chances of Rohit Sharma being appointed as the captain for Indian cricket team as there were talks of Virat Kohli being rested for the series. Despite Kohli playing the series, many of the regulars have been rested as Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohamad Shami and Umesh Yadav decided not to be part of the series but Kohli opted to be with the team. The move by Kohli also assured that there is no shift in captaincy but still, the selectors decided to elevate Rohit Sharma by making him vice-captain of the Indian cricket team.

The three time IPL winning captain has been handed the vice-captaincy for the first time, since making his debut. Indian team do not have a tradition of announcing vice-captains in bilateral series. Even for the ICC Champions Trophy, selectors did not name any vice-captain but this time, they decided to announce the deputy for skipper Kohli.
